Poor Vs Rich

There was a pious man who was very much devoted to Krishna. He was living at Mithila, in the country of Videha. His name was Srutadeva. He was a very contented man.Daily he was never ambitious. With what he got, he would satisfy his wants and his wife and children followed his example.

Bahulaswa was the name of the King who ruled Mithila. He was also a great devotee of Krishna.Since they were constantly meditating on him ,Lord Krishna ,decided to visit them once and bless them. He set out in his chariot towards Mithila. Many sages like Narada, Vamadeva and Vyasa also accompanied him. All the citizens and kings of those countries worshipped Krishna. The lotus face of Krishna with its loving look and charming smile brought peace and happiness to the minds of the people. At last,Krishna reached Mithila.Hearing of his arrival, the people of Mithila rushed to the outskirts of the city to offer their worship and welcome him. When they saw him, their faces and hearts bloomed with joy and they fell down prostrate before him in salutations.

Srutadeva and Bahulaswa also came to offer their worship. When they looked at the beautiful form of Krishna, tears flowed from their eyes.No words came from their mouths for a long time. They prostrated at his feet and worshipped him with all the Puja offerings.

  1. The king invited Krishna to be his guests.
  2. Srutadeva too invited him to his humble home to be blessed.Krishna did not want to displease either. He acceded to the requests of both.He assumed immediately two forms and visited the houses of both simultaneously, without the one knowing of his presence in the other’s house.

On Sri Krishna’s arrival at his palace, King Bahulaswa seated him on an excellent seat and washed his feet. Then he worshipped him with incense, sandle paste and other ingredients .He took the feet of Krishna in his lap and gently massaged them reverently. He then said, “O Lord! You have made me extremely happy by visiting my house. You have once said, “Neither Ananta my brother ,now Sri my consort , nor Bhrama my son is dear to Me as a devotee who constantly thinks of me.” To prove the truth of it you have come to bless me and my country. You must stay with us for some days and make my home a heaven on earth.”

Pleased by the devotion of the king,Krishna fulfilled his desire by staying there for a few days.

At the same time Krishna was also residing in the house of the poor Brahmana,Srutadeva,He too was very happy to have Krishna as his guest.Being poor, he could only offer him a darbasana, a seat made up of grass to sit on.He worshipped Krishna with tulsi leaves. He sat at the feet of Krishna, clasping those feet tight to his heart.Krishna was equally pleased with the simple honour he got from Brahmana. He felt no difference between the rich king and the poor Brahmana who vied with each other in devotion.

Krishna, by his staying in the two houses simultaneously demonstrated that he is the devotee of his devotees and that he makes no distinction between the rich and the poor. All he cares for is purity and devotion of the heart. He spent some days happily with the king and the poor man and then returned to Dwaraka.
